Dziennik Polski – Detroit Newspaper Database Search App

Database Search App

The above application is a One-Step Search App built using Steve Morse’s One-Step Website.
You can find Birth, Marriage, Death, and Polish Consular events and their newspaper publish dates which should be close to the vital record dates. There a few divorce announcements too!
On birth events, they do not put in the baby name. The name is most often the mother, but there were stretches where they posted the father’s name for the birth announcement.
The consular records can lead to a small paragraph about the person and why the Polish Consulate is seeking that person — which leads to the birth village often and sometimes residences or familial relationships.

  1. I found a record in here for my grandparents wedding. What can I do with the information? Is there a way to get a copy of the article or announcement?

    • Hi Joe! Thank you for reading and writing too! First, let me plug my Dziennik Polski web page:
      http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~meliasz/detroit/DziennikPolski/DziennikPolski_DetroitMI.html

This has library & archives across the USA that have the microfilm. If you live in MI, then the following will be of use to you:

The Michigan State Archives & Library 702 W. Kalamazoo St, Lansing, MI 48915 Phone: (517) 373-3559. [Has 1904-1941]
The Detroit Public Library(Burton Collection) Main Branch– 5201 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48202 Phone: (313) 833-1000. [Has 1904-..]
Polonica Americana Research Institute (PARI), 3535 Indian Trail, Orchard Lake, MI 48324 – [1904-1920 microfilm, 1930’s-? bundles]

Use the newspaper date to figure which microfilm to load and view.

If you were looking for a death record be sure to look for a death announcement and a possible funeral card. The funeral cards are so very loaded with info, so I hope you are lucky in that find.

  2. Hello, I have contacted the Michigan State Archives for MARYANNA BEJMA death information from the index. The index gives the date of December 21 1915. They searched thru the paper with that date and told me there is nothing there for her. So what do you suggest now. Carol

    • Carol,
Hi, welcome & thanks for /reading/writing the blog and using Dziennik Polski search app.
MARYANNA BEJMA was found by PGSCT&NE. In 99% of the cases it was a newspaper listing … But every once in a while they had access to a funeral card (or something) from a Detroit Church and added that too. That may be the case for your ancestor. I cannot vouch for the librarian/archivist at Michigan. Perhaps they only checked Jame’s Tye’s list (which was a source for the data too). What I have in the app was gathered by myself, James Tye, PGSCT&NE, and MANY others who contributed a newsletter or digital pictures to me for inclusion. All of what I added was from the actual newspaper and can be found by meticulously searching page-by-page of newspapers or microfilm. This can be error-prone as it is a Polish Language newspaper and sometimes the sources are not very legible.

What I would do would be go to one of the archives I have listed on the Dziennik Polski (Detroit) webpage (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~meliasz/detroit/DziennikPolski/DziennikPolski_DetroitMI.html) and look at December 1915 newspapers/microfilm.
